MUGA Scan (Gated Blood Pool)
A MUGA scan measures how efficiently your heart pumps. It's a safe, painless procedure that uses two small injections to make your red blood cells visible to a special camera.
How to prepare
No special preparation
There are no dietary restrictions or special prep for a MUGA scan. Eat and drink normally.
What happens during the test
You'll receive two injections 20 minutes apart. The injections briefly make your red blood cells radioactive, which lets a special camera and computer measure your heart's pumping efficiency. You'll have no side effects from the injections, and the radiation exposure is minimal. The technologist processes the study after you leave, and your cardiologist interprets the results — your referring physician should have them within a few days.
